Sunset Valley Golf Course Review
The Gurus played Sunset Valley Golf Course located in Morris County, New Jersey. I have played this course in the past however I wanted a crack at it after all the renovations were complete. From what I can tell, all of the major changes that were made to the course affected the front nine. The renovations were definitely a plus which tremendously enhanced our overall golf experience. The new second hole is one of the top 5 holes I have played all year. The one regret I have is playing the second hole from the white tee box, do yourself a favor and take the walk up to blues and play the hole from there. You can thank me later. The back nine also played nice and offered a challenging atmosphere, especially the final three holes. Overall I ranked this course this course a 6.5 out of 10 and my fellow guru Mark ranked it a 5.5 out of 10.

The fairways were in pretty good shape, however the rough had some areas that were already burnt out, not to mention other areas had weeds growing, but overall for a county course I thought the conditions of the fairways, rough and tee boxes were more than adequate. The one area I was a little disappointed in was inconsistency of the greens. Some greens were really fast while others were extremely slow, some greens were spongy and some had the signs of a fungus starting to grow on them. It’s unfortunate because if this course was maintained just a touch better it would be a real gem with the recent renovations.
Facilities: 3
Facilities at this course are really nothing special, but what can you really expect from a county course. There really is no pro-shop rather a place to pay for your greens fees with a few golf shirts, balls and other miscellaneous golfing needs available for purchase. If you are a golfer that likes to hit balls prior to arriving at the first tee, then make sure you hit a few ball before you get to the course as Sunset Valley does not offer a driving range. Even though the course doesn’t have a bar, it does have a snack area upstairs from the pro shop, in which they do sell beer for all those golfers like us, that enjoy a frosty beverage after the round.
Price: 7
Price is good for in county residents, I paid $56 which included a cart, which I thought was fair for the course. However, Mark not being a Morris County resident had to fork over $80 to play. I think $80 may be a little much to pay to play here. In talking with Mark we both agreed that for an extra $15 he could have played Berkshire Valley a top 5 course in New Jersey in the golf gurus’ opinion.

The staff at this course was alright. The starter was extremely nice but provided no insight on the course (however, I am sure if you asked him he would have been more than happy to share his knowledge). The people in the pro-shop (if you can call it that) were pleasant but not overly friendly. I can say that there was definitely a ranger presence on the course that made sure the play continued at a brisk pace.

Overall Golf Experience: 6
The layout of the holes at Sunset Valley Golf Course definitely provides a fun and challenging track. I believe the new renovations provided a much needed facelift to the course. If the course was maintained just slightly better and if they could get the greens more consistent, then this would really be a dynamite course. This course is a no brainer for Morris County residents, but for out of county residents, I would recommend taking your $80 (if riding) and going elsewhere.
