Great Gorge Country Club Review - New Jersey Golf Course Reviews
We played Great Gorge Country Club located in Hamburg, New Jersey. We haven’t played it for a couple years now and decided we would give it another look. The few times we have played the course, we always left satisfied and felt like we got good value. The course is part of the Crystal Springs 7 courses. It’s not as well maintained as the top three signature courses, Crystal Springs, Ballyowen and Wild Turkey, but truthfully not many courses are. The course offers three 9 hole tracks, Lake, Rail and Quarry. We played Rail and Quarry. I can’t comment as much on Lake because we didn’t play it, but Rail and Quarry I thought were challenging and fair. Plus it provided beautiful views. I would think the perfect time of year to play this course in particular would be in the fall just as the trees start to turn.

From what I saw, the fairways at Great Gorge Country Club were in pretty good shape. I didn’t have a chance to hit out of the fairways too often because I was just awful off the tee, but they looked nice. Some holes seemed a bit patchy but for the most part they were nice. I am not sure if it was because it was wet and raining or if it was just that thick, but hitting out of the rough was no fun and was definitely penalizing, but hey an easy way to correct that problem is to hit fairways. The greens for the most part were in good shape, however, there were a few that were pretty bad, (i.e. 7th hole green on Rail) which was almost completely lost.

The course provides a pro shop, bar and grill, locker room, putting green and driving range. To me the three most important out of the bunch are the putting green, driving range and bar/grill. The putting green is huge and provides different breaks that you see on the course. The driving range is just a typical driving range with mats, nothing special. We did enjoy a few pitchers after the round, and one was even on the house.
Price: 5
I thought the course is priced a little too high. We played it in Prime season on a weekend which cost us $85. It’s not a terrible price for the course but in my opinion I would think the value of it is between $65-$70.
Booking Process:
The booking process is fairly simple, we booked it through the Crystal Springs website. You have to create an account and then search for the time you want, or you can always call the course directly.
Overall Golf Experience: 7
I would recommend this course even though I think it is a little overpriced. The Quarry and Rail provides some scenic views and some changes in elevations. If you happen to play Rail, on the first hole, hit from the tee box up top. It makes for a really fun tee shot. If you hit from below you are definitely taking away from the hole. As a warning, drive carefully going down the hill, the Gurus spun out around a turn and almost crashed into the guard rail. There are a few holes on the two nines that are really challenging, and there are a few that are pretty easy. I think you kind of get the best of both worlds. Which is why I think it’s a fun course to play. If you are expecting the course to be along the lines of Wild Turkey, Ballyowen and Crystal Springs, than this course probably is not for you. If I were to play the course again, I would probably choose to play it in October once the leaves start changing color, and not during prime hours.
